The wetland habitats compose intermediary, dynamic ecosystems of enormous importance which are threatened by the human activities, particularly in the over-populated regions of Operational Program ARCHIMED. The main objective of project WETMUST is to develop, evaluate and apply an innovative and multi
criteria system of analysis for wetland habitats of international importance which will contribute in their better management. The collection of data will be based: in the unification of satellite pictures, in neuronic networks, in technologies of unmanned air vehicles and in Systems of Geographic Information. The results will include protocol of follow-up of infrastructure, time and space indicators and Worldwide Web Geo-bases of data, which are expected to increase the knowledge and the level of protection of wetland habitats. The networking and the international level of collaboration will have immediately positive results for the authorities of wetland habitat management.
The main activities of the project include the setup of a mechanism of international collaboration, the determination of protocol of follow-up of wetland habitats, the development – activation of infrastructure of monitoring, the collection and treatment of data, the education of the final user and finally the dissemination of results and acquired knowledge.
The selected regions of control are:
- the lakes of Koroneia and Bolbi – Greece
- the gulf of Kalloni in Lesvos – Greece
- the lagoon of Kotychioy – Greece
- the lakes Montitsio – Italy
The main objective of the project is to develop and evaluate a multi criteria system of analysis and monitoring of woodland habitats of international importance. Three levels of follow-up will be completed: big scale telescopic pictures, low altitude reception of pictures with use of drones and continuous measurements of the field collected via a network of sensors. After the development of the above, the visits will be continued but their frequency will be minimized. The system of monitoring will be constituted by a database of collected geo-data, by a System of Geographic Information with suitable algorithms for process and collection of data and by an interactive website of shared use of information, which will serve the collaboration and the co- ordination of involved services of regions of different states.
